The HTLV virus requires more attention to avoid the illness and the disease – the horizon

Brazil is one of the countries with the highest number of people infected with HTLV virus (T-lymphoptera virus). Although it has been found more than 30 years ago, it still causes difficulties in the diagnosis of the general population and even health care professionals, and as a result, the virus is becoming more prevalent.

However, HTLV requires more attention. The virus can cause severe illnesses such as myelopathy (neurodegenerative disease, leg weakness, inflammation difficulties, severe transplantation) and leukemia (malignant neoplasms).

In addition to these severe diseases, the virus can lead to other health problems, such as skin problems, pain in the lower arms, belly (lower back), defecation or difficulty in urinating. Symptoms that cause HTLV are progressive and are usually felt in the area below the chest. Viral-related illnesses usually occur after age 40, but can come prematurely.

"Unfortunately, many people with HTLV do not know that they will suffer and can send the virus to others. Because of the absence of anti-viral treatment, it is important to ensure that infection can be caused by unprotected sex; contact with contaminated blood by sharing needles and syringes; and infected mother from the mother treats the baby with breastmilk, "explains Professor UFMG Medical School Denis Uts.

It also does not come into conflict with HTLV by sharing quotation marks, for example, that it is a form of other serious illnesses such as hepatitis.

According to Edel Stankholly, professor of microbiology at the UFMG Institute of Biological Sciences, HTLV virus is a minor infection in the world.

"There is no financial contribution to the research and there is no coherent public health response, which does not have the same treatment for HTLV patients. In most cases the patient gets into the screen, but the diagnosis is not closed as the affected areas may change. In addition, there are several referral centers for carriers. Without investments, we can not start research and much information about HTLV is still unknown. And that is the truth we need to change. In the near future, we hope to develop therapeutic vaccines for people, "he said.

Test and treatment

In 2008, the Minas Gerais Government issued the Law No. 17344, which requires obtaining HTLV virus infection diagnosis and performing serological tests for the treatment of detected conditions. In Brazil, the HTLV test is mandatory in all blood banks to avoid contamination by blood.

Because of the high prevalence of HTLV among family groups, one person in the family carries viruses and the rest will be tested to see if there is a virus.

Professor Yulia Kaparali, Professor of UFMG Medical School, said: "Knowing the diagnosis is the first step, so the infected person can receive adequate medical attention to control symptoms and improve the quality of life.

The teacher also emphasizes the importance of changing sexual habits. "We have to use condoms in all sexual intercourse. We have to do periodic serologic research, keeping the constant partners who do not use condoms, because we or we may not know that the virus has been identified since the immune system switches from disease to disease. These measures are crucial for casual partners, "he warns.

Belo-Waron has two reference centers for the treatment of HTLV: CTR / DIP Orestes Diniz and Eduardo de Meneses Hospital for Infectious-Parasitic Diseases.

"CTR Orestes Diniz is the sister company of das Clínicas, the hospital of Belo Horizonte City Hospital. Once a week, the HTLV lab works and is available from the City Hospital, Heminka's and Hospital Clinics. The Laboratory of the Femgig Eduardo de Menezes hospital works once a week and controls the flow of the Rule, such as Orestes Dink.
