In the beginning of 2017, the introduction of neutral packages should reduce tobacco consumption within the framework of tobacco control. The new French study proves the mission to be between 12 and 17 years of age.

As part of France's anti-tobacco policy, January 1, 2017 France launches neutral tobacco packages. Everyone has the same shape, uniformity, color, the same typography, loses logos. as well as new visual health warnings that indicate the danger of smoking. The goal is to reduce cigarette smoking, especially among young people between the ages of 12 and 17 years.

In order to assess the impact of this measure, in 2017, Inserm and the National Cancer Institute will start the DePICT study (Smoking perceptions, illustrations, and behavioral characteristics). In this study, 2 different waves of 6,000 people (4,000 adults and 2,000 adolescents) have been studied – one until the introduction of neutral packages and the second one after a year of smoking.

A year after adolescents aged 12 to 17 years of research have come to the neutral packages:

  • From 1 to 5 (20.8%), the first time, compared to 1 to 4 (26.3%) in 2016, taking into account their tobacco and socio-economic characteristics. This decline is most common among girls: from 1 to 10 (13.4%) versus 4 to 1 (25.2%);
  • Young people believe that smoking is dangerous (83.9% in the year is 78.9% in 2016) and due to their fear of reporting (73.3% versus 69.2%);
  • They also admit that they or their families accept smoking (16.2% against 25.4% and 11.2% against 24.4%);
  • Young smokers will be less likely to smoke in 2017 than in 2016 (23.9% against 34.3%).

According to the authors of the study, Maria Melchior and Fabienna El Huri,These results show that the neutral package can help young people cleanse tobacco and reduce their experiments."They"the overall result will depend on the policy of tobacco control, including introduction of neutral packages, raising and promoting prices, and awareness-raising campaignsFuture research focuses on the impact of the teenagers' awareness of smoking.
